May.Have you also been misinformed about your Fertile Window?
In short, the fertile window is the ‘time of the month you are fertile and therefore sexual intercourse can lead to a conception’. If you want to learn about how to get pregnant, CORRECT knowledge of the fertile window is extremely important. It’s a pity that many women in the modern society have been mislead about when their actual fertile window is.
Simply put;
- Have sexual intercourse during the fertile window – you may get pregnant
- Have intercourse outside your fertile window – chances of you getting pregnant are ZERO
So when is your exact fertile window?
- The short ‘textbook’ answer: Between 10th and 17th days of your menstrual cycle (assuming Day 1 is the first day of bleeding)
- The CORRECT answer: The above-mentioned ‘textbook’ answer is correct only in 25% – 30% of women!
Want to get pregnant? Know YOUR Fertile Window!
A picture is worth a thousand words! So look at these two images first, but please read the text underneath to understand what’s really going on. These images have been compiled based on data from published scientific research such as the one mentioned at the bottom of this page.
Unfortunately, the menstrual cycles of only a very small fraction of women (about 10%) ‘go by the rules’! There are no hard and fast rules in biology. If you have ‘scheduled’ your intercourse to fit this kind of fertile window, your chances of getting pregnant may not be too high because your ACTUAL fertile window may lie outside the above window of opportunity.
A more correct representation of the real fertility phase is illustrated below.

What Image 2 does NOT mean with regard to the fertile window
Do not interpret Image 2 as saying that your fertile window lasts from day 6 to day 22 of your menstrual cycle. Depending on the individual, it could be anywhere within that long range.
For example, within day 6 to 22 period, your fertile window could be from;
- Day 6 – 11 or,
- Day 8 – 13 or,
- Day 11 – 16 or,
- Day 14 – 19 or,
- Day 17 – 22
- It really depends on the individual.

How do you use this information to conceive?
Short answer : Sexual intercourse from day 6 to day 22 of your cycle if you happen to have a 28 day menstrual cycle.
Long answer : It is highly recommended that you kindly read the following ‘biology lesson’ to correctly understand the biology behind the above images so that you know exactly what we’re talking about. A correct understanding of the biology of the fertility window will help in your quest to learn how to get pregnant fast and efficiently.
Fertile Window – Traditional knowledge fact/myth(s) set #1:
- The typical menstrual cycle lasts 28 days (from first day of bleeding of one menstruation to the first day of bleeding on the next menstruation)
- In a typical menstrual cycle, ovulation (release of the egg from the ovary) occurs on day 14 (halfway between two adjacent menstruations)
What’s NOT correct about above ‘facts/myths’ :
- We all know that not all women have EXACTLY 28 day cycles. According to research, even among women who experience exactly 28 day cycles, only 10% may ovulate exactly on the 14th day.
- The day of ovulation could range from day 10 to 22 of the cycle even among women having 28 day menstrual cycles.
- Studies have shown that ovulation may occur before day 13 in as much as 15% of the women and after day 21 in as much as 16% of women. That leaves approximately 70% women ovulating between day 13 and 21 of the cycle.
Fertile Window – Traditional knowledge fact/myth(s) set #2:
- You should have sexual intercourse during your 8-day ‘fertile window’ which typically includes 5 days before ovulation, the day of ovulation and 2 days after ovulation.
- This is usually considered to be the 8 days between (and including) days 10 and 17 of that 28 day menses cycle.
What’s NOT correct about above ‘facts/myths’:
- Cycles of only about 25% – 30% women happen to follow the above ‘rules’ with regard to the fertile window.
- The ‘fertile window’ of approximately 70% of women happens to fall either before day 10 or after day 17.
- The fertile window ranges from about day 6 to day 21 even in women with ‘regular’ 28 day cycles. But it could be earlier or later than that depending on whether your cycle is shorter or longer than 28 days.
- Fertility dramatically goes down after the day of ovulation. That is because the lifespan of an ovum (egg) is only 12 to 24 hours after ovulation.
Potential solution/s to the inconsistent timing of ovulation/fertile window
- Get yourself an ovulation predictor and identify the exact day of your ovulation – do this a few cycles and have an educated guesstimate about when you are going to ovulate. And then calculate 5 days back from that estimated day of ovulation and treat that as your fertile window. You know what to do during that fertile window if you want to become pregnant!
- If you don’t want to/can’t get/afford an ovulation predictor, you should not limit sexual intercourse to day 10 – 17 of your cycle. It’s probably best that you have sexual intercourse throughout days 6 to 22 of the cycle to maximize your chances of getting pregnant. That way, whenever you happen to ovulate in the above ovulation ‘spectrum’, you are increasing the chances of conceiving by ‘harboring’ sperms to meet your ovum.
- If you know exactly when you’re going to ovulate (with the aid of a ovulation predictor), rather than shooting for a few days before and after ovulation, it’s best to consider the day of ovulation and the 5 days preceding ovulation as the 6 days of your fertile window! The last 3 days of this fertile window are even better (maximum fertility) than the first 3 days, if you knew what those days were.
Getting pregnant is not only about the fertile window. However many couples do struggle to get pregnant simply because they have been misinformed about the fertile window. If you were one of them, there is no doubt that this information you learned today would have opened a new chapter in your quest of learning how to get pregnant.
The information shared on this article was compiled from data presented on the published scientific research article, The timing of the “fertile window” in the menstrual cycle: day specific estimates from a prospective study.

Hi Tolejalawest,
All I can say is that there are certainly women that have become pregnant even after 40 years. It’s definitely not impossible. Have you downloaded our ebook? It has a specific section about ‘getting pregnant for the older women’
Thanks and all the best to you!
Nancy
